Background of the study
Technical education has increasingly become a transformative tool for economic empowerment, particularly among women in regions where traditional roles have historically limited their access to high-income opportunities. In Minna Local Government Area, Niger State, technical education programs have been introduced with the aim of bridging gender disparities by equipping women with marketable skills. These programs provide training in areas such as tailoring, hairdressing, computer literacy, and other vocational skills that directly contribute to income generation and self-sufficiency (Okafor, 2023). Over the past few years, initiatives aimed at integrating technical education for women have gained traction, driven by both governmental and non-governmental organizations. The infusion of technical skills into the educational fabric has led to noticeable improvements in women's participation in economic activities, thereby promoting broader social and economic inclusion. Despite these positive developments, significant challenges persist. Cultural norms, limited access to quality training facilities, and socio-economic barriers continue to hinder the full realization of economic empowerment through technical education (Eze, 2024). Moreover, the pace of curriculum innovation in these programs does not always keep up with the evolving demands of the labor market. As a result, many women may find themselves equipped with skills that are not entirely aligned with current economic opportunities. Nevertheless, technical education remains a powerful catalyst for change, as it enhances not only technical competencies but also boosts confidence and entrepreneurial spirit among women. By combining practical training with theoretical knowledge, these programs foster an environment where women can transition from traditional roles to more dynamic economic participation. The ongoing collaboration between educational institutions, local communities, and industry stakeholders is crucial to ensuring that technical education programs remain relevant and effective (Okafor, 2023; Eze, 2024). This study aims to explore how technical education contributes to the economic empowerment of women in Minna, examining both the direct and indirect impacts on income generation, skill acquisition, and socio-economic status.
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential of technical education to drive economic empowerment among women, the implementation of such programs in Minna Local Government Area faces multiple challenges. Women in the region continue to encounter socio-cultural and economic barriers that restrict their access to quality technical training. One critical issue is the inadequate infrastructural support within training institutions, which limits the effectiveness of the programs designed for women's economic empowerment (Eze, 2024). Additionally, the curriculum in many technical education programs remains outdated, failing to match the dynamic needs of the modern economy. This discrepancy leaves many female graduates underprepared for emerging job markets and entrepreneurial opportunities. Moreover, there is a persistent stigma attached to technical and vocational education, which is often perceived as less prestigious than conventional academic routes. Such perceptions discourage many women from enrolling in technical courses, thereby reducing the overall impact of these programs on economic empowerment. Another problem is the lack of effective mentorship and support systems that could help women transition from training to employment or business development. Without proper guidance, the skills acquired during technical training may not translate into sustainable economic gains. Consequently, these challenges contribute to a cycle of underemployment and limited economic advancement among women in the region. This study seeks to identify and analyze these challenges in depth and to propose strategic interventions that could enhance the effectiveness of technical education in empowering women economically (Okafor, 2023). By addressing these issues, the research aims to provide a framework for policy and program improvements that will enable women in Minna to fully harness the benefits of technical education and achieve greater economic independence.
